Fennel Seeds
Fennel helps your horse’s metabolism find balance. Fennel works wonders balancing horses with poor or voracious appetites and / or feed conversion difficulties and / or digestive problems. Will also help the bowels re-establish healthy intestinal flora.
Fennel can be fed to your horse on a regular basis.
Fennel seed is also safe to feed lactating mares and mares in late pregnancy.
Chaste Tree
Chaste Tree has been traditionally used for moodiness in mares, and for mares that have problems with their breeding cycles. It can help to regulate hormones. Particularly useful in stallions that are dangerous and excitable, it is also helpful for geldings that are still behaving like stallions, as it inhibits male sex drive.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek can help stimulate appetite therefore recommended as a feed to tempt picky eaters and improve general body condition, as part of a natural diet.
Fenugreek’s chemical composition is very similar to that of cod-liver oil.
Do not give Fenugreek to pregnant mares as it is a uterine stimulant, although once foaled can be given to help increase milk production.
Hawthorn
Helpful for a horse recovering from laminitis or navicular syndrome as Hawthorn stimulates blood flow and particularly helps improve blood circulation to the limbs. Is also used for the heart and circulatory system helping blood flow, blood pressure and heart rate. Useful in the treatment of heart strain and bleeders.
Hawthorn can also be used to treat pregnant mares that have a history of slipping foals prematurely, and for supporting foals during weaning. Use only half the recommended dose when treating foals.
Licorice Powder
Also helpful in the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions including itch. Coughs and colds. Helpful for treating allergic respiratory problems and heaves
One of the main constituents glycrrhizin encourages healing of gut ulceration, but because Licorice is also laxative and horses with this problem usually have very loose manure.
Licorice has an oestrogenic activity and has been used to improve fertility in female animals; it is therefore advisable to avoid its use during pregnancy.
Licorice also has application in the treatment of adrenal exhaustion and in removing adhesions after foaling or surgery.
Licorice is a very potent herb that should not be given to a horse for more than 3 months continuously, as it can alter your horse’s body and cause water retention.
Raspberry Leaf
Used to help strengthen and tone the uterine muscles, to assist with contractions during foaling, checking hemorrhage and encouraging cleansing of afterbirth. Also beneficial for a mare that is having difficulty falling pregnant.
Raspberry also addresses diarrhoea and upper respiratory tract discomfort or inflammation.
